The Nation
Bangladesh is a country that's infrastructure revolves around the many river deltas flowing from the Himalayas. Although education is compulsory for its population, Bangladesh has significantly low literacy levels of 54% for males and 32% for females. For many children and even adults, the hope of professional careers is lost without possessing even basic literacy skills. Many familles struggle to support themselves and are constantly battling many forms of sickness and disease.
The Project
In 1979 Bishu and Vijaya Chowdhuri founded Christian Discipleship Centre (CDC), a full time residential, non-denominational centre for men and women. These centres are involved at many levels within their local communities. They facilitate church planting, raising up leaders, reaching and teaching children, and giving practical assistance wherever possible.
In January 2006 a pilot project of six adult literacy centres commenced in six districts of Bangladesh. The vision is to see similar centres established in each of the other 58 Bangladesh districts. The one-year literacy program for illiterate teenagers and adults gives individuals the ability to gain better paid employment and assist their children in their education. Additional subjects include leadership, children’s ministry, primary school teaching, basic health care, and income generation.
The centre also teaches basic health and hygiene skills, baby care, gives medical advice, provides some basic medications and brings children in some of the poorer villages milk, vitamins, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. The medical support from the CDC helps locals to fight against bacterial diarrhoea, hepatitis A and E, typhoid fever, dengue fever and malaria.
The Need
Contributions from World Outreach supporters will allow Bishu and Vijaya to continue running the current centres and see future centres established in the other districts of Bangladesh.
