What to Pray for
For the missionary's health
- One of the most effective ways Satan has to cripple missionary work is to attack the bodies of missionaries and send them back home. Recognise that it is not God's will that Satan strips mission fields of workers through sickness, and resists him.
Psalm 103:21; 67:2; 107:20; Deut. 7:15; Isa. 53:5.
- Recognise that it is the will of God for His children to have health and strength to carry out His work. Ps.97:10.
- Exercise your God-given authority to bind Satan and loose the child of God from his power. Psa. 42:11; 43:5; Prov. 4:22; Jer: 33:6; Jn. 10:1013; Rom.81 1 B, 3 Jn.2.
- Pray that God will quicken all these promises to the missionary himself.
Matt. 18:18; Luke 91; 10:19; Mark 16:17-18.
For the protection of the mind of the missionary
- The trying climate, the oppression of the enemy, the difficult circumstances, all work towards a nervous breakdown for the missionary.
- Pray that the missionary may enter into the provision for him in Rev. 12:11.
- Pray that the missionary may enter into His rest and peace.
- Pray that the missionary may refuse to hear any accusation from Satan against a fellow believer. John 14:27; Heb. 4:9.
- Satan may defeat a missionary through injecting suspicion against his fellow workers or the national Christians. This separates him from his brethren and from God, and is disastrous. Zech. 7:10; Psa. 62:3a.
For protection against satan's attacks on the missionary's spirit
- Intense powers of darkness make work difficult and 11 slow, and it is easy for the missionary to give way to discouragement. This is fatal.
- Pray for His encouragement and strength to be given to break through the powers of darkness.
- Pray that the missionary may learn to resist Satan, take his place of authority over him, and refuse everything that comes from him. Ps. 147:3; 27:14, 31:24; Deut. 31:6; Josh. 1:6,9,
- The accuser of the brethren is always on hand to accuse them of being a failure, or out of the will of the Lord, etc. 1 Peter 5:8-9; James 4:7; Luke 10:19.
For the love of God to fill the heart of the missionary
- Missionaries live in abnormal and difficult situations, and the natural love in the human heart will not stand the test. Without the love of Christ filling the heart the difficult situations faced, will bring about hardness, impatience, sharpness of speech, anger, and sometimes even bitterness. Pray for His love to fill the heart - for the fellow-missionary. Rom. 5:5.
- Naturally speaking, it may be far harder to love that fellow-worker, who is always at hand and from whom there is no escape, than the unsaved person, who is a little further away. It is imperative that there be love between missionaries, for only then, can God bless the work.
- Pray for His love - for the unsaved. Again natural love breaks down and fails to meet the tests, for the missionary is not appreciated by the heathen. Neither he nor the message he brings is wanted. He is a foreigner and an intruder. Through His love and compassion the missionary is able to take shame and return time and time again till love has broken through and both he and his message are accepted. Psalm 133.
That the missionary will have a soft heart
- In his dealing with the indigenous Christian. It is often necessary to rebuke sin, but if done in hardness of spirit it tends to harden the transgressor and drive him further from the Lord. Like begets like; brokenness in the missionary products the same in the indigenous Christian. Psalm 51:17; 34:18.
- In witnessing to the unsaved. Eph. 4:15-16.
- It is easy to preach the Gospel with hardness, but it will only harden the heart of the sinner, whereas brokenness and weeping will break the heart of stone. Psalm 126:5-6.
For God's anointing to be on the missionary
- How easy it is to labour in the arm of flesh, depending on one's own strength, wisdom, ability etc., but how futile, and Satan only laughs - for he recognises no power but the power of God. Only the Spirit-filled missionary will be effective in setting free captives of Satan. So pray, pray, PRAY that the missionary may be filled and continually filled with the Spirit. Acts 4:31,33. Acts 1:8.
That the missionary may know how to exercise his authority over satan
- Satan was completely defeated at Calvary. God has placed the enforcing of Satan's defeat in every land in the hands of His servants and has given them the authority. Satan, however, will not recognise his defeat until forced to do so by the servant of Christ. Luke 10:19; Matt. 18:18; Mark 16:17-18; Eph. 1:17-23; 2:6; 6:10-18.
For revival
- More is accomplished in a few weeks through revival than is accomplished in years of ordinary labours. God has promised to pour out His Spirit in these last days on all flesh this means every field, so pray it into fulfillment. Joel 2:28-29.
For the establishment of the indigenous church
- In these perilous days the missionary may be driven out at any time, but if the indigenous Church is established the work will go on.
- The national prepared by the Spirit is more effective in his witness than the missionary can ever be. Pray for Bible Schools, etc.
- Pray for indigenous Christians to enter Bible School.
For more labourers
- All occupied fields are shorthanded.
- More missionaries are needed to enter new territories.
